The perpetually propulsive-sounding music of Milwaukee’s The Delphines has consistently gotten the singles treatment since the band’s start — small bursts of song that seemed fitting for their hyper-intensive style, but teasing, never promising more. A band can only sustain its fans on singles for so long, so thankfully, singles are not the permanent status and the Delphines finally have a a proper full-length — hush.
The band’s signature lo-fi sound receives a bump with a more refined production treatment and everything that should pop, pops. Electric guitars dig and percussion patters darkly behind frontwoman Jami Eaton’s sweet but snarly vocals, paired with Harrison Colby’s subdued booming echo, always a perfect counterpart for their tales of anxious and volatile love. hush. ends triumphantly with “Notches”‘ chorus-y strength-in-numbers singalong and a lusty “all right!”. All right, all right, indeed. Delphines’ full-length is as satisfying as we were hoping for. Listen for yourself at the band’s Bandcamp page.
The Delphines release for ‘hush.’ is this Saturday, May 30th at the Riverwest Public House. 10pm, 21+. The band visits WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, June 3rd. Listen live at 91.7 FM or WMSE.org.
