James Chance, the former Milwaukeean with various monikers (his birth name is James Siegfried, but he was also known as James White), was an important figure in the genre of No Wave, adding his jazz saxophone background and experience into his music of choice, art-punk, in the late ’90s in bands such as Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, James Chance and the Contortions, James Chance & the Sardonic Symphonics, James Chance and Terminal City, James White and the Blacks and the Flaming Demonics. Trust us. If there was a band with the words ‘and the’, James was part of it. And it was good.
Notably, to fellow Milwaukeeans, is Chance’s schooling with local ties. Chance attended the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music before moving to New York City in the mid-’70s. Chance was a well-honed musician, and expected his counterparts to adhere to his level, and was constantly in collaboration with big names such asLydia Lunch, Arto Lindsay and Blondie.
