Sad news today for fans of garage rocker, Jay Reatard. Earlier this morning, Jay Reatard (born Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr.) was found dead at about 3:30 a.m. in his bed in Memphis. Authorities say he passed away in his sleep. Goner Records says, “It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our good friend Jay Reatard. Jay died in his sleep last night. We will pass along information about funeral arrangements when they are made public”.
Lindsey began recording music for Goner Records at the young age of fifteen in the Reatards, but is best known for his work with Alicja Trout and Rich Crook as the Lost Sounds, which began in 2001 and ended in 2005. The Lost Sounds’ synthed-up punk rock with male/female vocals popularized not only the band, but gave Lindsey extra attention. After the breakup of the Lost Sounds, Lindsey struck out on his own to record Blood Visions in 2006 [In the Red] and Watch Me Fall on Matador in 2009, with a bunch of other projects in the fire, alongside. After hooking up with Matador Records, Lindsey sent off his first Matador release,Matador Singles ’08, receiving much attention from the press, despite many critics complaining that every song sounded the same. “I just think it’s noisy pop music,” he once explained.
Lindsey ended up getting more attention for his onstage antics and lust for life ideals, receiving quite a bit of flak over a recent onstage uproar started by two show-goers in Austin. Fortunately, fans in Milwaukee saw Lindsey get an enthused reception in Milwaukee when he played a well-attended and energetic show alongside Spoon at Milwaukee’s Riverside Theater for New Year’s Eve and will have a positive, although sad, memory of a true talent.
