Released nearly two years ago, Juniper Tar’s To the Trees impressed listeners with its quiet deliberateness. The local folk-rock group makes good use of solid vocal harmonies (having two singing siblings in the band doesn’t hurt) and dynamics to hit the hush on the right spots to highlight the weighty lyrics; but when it comes time to turn up the volume, the five-piece launches into straight-up guitar-laden rock-outs.
Tonight, the band releases a new EP (dubbed The Howl Street EP for the locale at which it was recorded) at Club Garibaldi’s, a further demonstration of their soft-loud capabilities through various degrees of guitars, keys and intricate percussion. Elements of pop filter throughout the roots rock jam sessions, creating a new element over a dustily classic genre.
The above video (click the photo) features Juniper Tar performing new material at Forward Music Fest last Fall in Madison, where the band played the High Noon Saloon. Tonight, listen to more new stuff from Juniper Tar at their Howl Street EP release, which was created recently at the Bay View studio, with the engineering help from Shane Hochstetler. Of working with Hochstetler, Jason Mohr (singer/guitarist) mentioned this in an interview with The Madison Music Review, “We knew Shane was good, but we didn’t decide to record with him until we heard what he was doing with Chris DeMay’s [guitarist/pianist of Juniper Tar] solo record,” said Mohr. He continued, “Shane was more well-known for recording the louder, I guess, more punk rock Milwaukee bands. They always sounded good, but until we heard Chris’ recording, we had no idea how good he actually is. It turns out he has a really great ear for the more folk-rock, Americana-leaning music that we play. From the get go, he knew exactly what we wanted, and helped us find that sound that’s so hard to replicate on a recording. Shane is amazing! We liked his work so much we named the EP after his studio.”
Juniper Tar plays Club Garibaldi’s (2491 S. Superior) at 9 p.m. tonight. With the Vulgarians and WMSE DJ Dori Zori.
