This week’s Alternating Currents (Sundays, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. on WMSE), has WMSE DJ Hal Rammel airing Alternating Currents Live’s third and final concert of the season featuring Urs Leimgruber, Charlotte Hug and Jacques Demierre. Leimgruber will perform on tenor and soprano saxophones, Hug on viola and voice and Jacques Demierre on toy piano and voice. Rammel gives us the details on this exciting listening event:
Born in Lucern, Switzerland, Urs Leimgruber has been active for many years in all areas of contemporary improvisation, composition, jazz and new music. His own projects have included a long association with Fritz Hauser as a duo and in a variety of trios that have included Joëlle Léandre and Marilyn Crispell. Most recently he formed ‘quartet noir’ with Marilyn Crispell, Joëlle Léandre and Fritz Hauser and a trio with Jacques Demierre and Barre Phillips. Urs Leimgruber has also performed extensively as a solo artist and has been involved in mixed media presentations, providing music for dance, radio plays and film.
Based in Zurich, Switzerland, Charlotte Hug is member of the “London Improvisers Orchestra”, and one of the founding members of the “Stellari String Quartet” with the leading British exponents of free improvisation Philipp Wachsmann, Marcio Mattos and John Edwards. She collaborates with performers such as Joan Jeanrenaud, Maggie Nicols, Barry Guy, Phil Minton, Larry Ochs, Evan Parker, Elliott Sharp. Alongside her activities in international exhibitions, Hug is also fully active as a concert performer, soloist, composer and conductor of her own works at major festivals in Europe, the United States, and Canada.
Swiss pianist Jacques Demierre works in jazz, improvised music, contemporary music and sound installations, as well as composing music for concerts, theater and dance. His instrumental array extends to voice and all variety of keyboards from celeste to toy piano. He is also a freelance music writer, writing for Contrechamps, which focuses on twentieth century music. He has performed and recorded with Sylvie Courvoisier, Barre Philips, Martial Solal, Joelle Leandre, Carlos Zingaro, Ikue Mori, Isabelle Duthoit, and many others.
