Short and Sweet: WMSE Talks to Midlake

November saw the release of a new album from Midlake (of Denton, Texas) and it marked not only the release of a new album for the band, but a new configuration, as they parted ways with former vocalist and lead, Tim Smith. Seven minus one equals six, there’s no denying, but less is often more and the sextet sounds stronger than ever, forgoing their formerly trademark pastoral and folky vibe. A good once-over and the band blazed forth with their new material, its more psych-inspired sound holding plenty of momentum. Guitarist, Eric Pulido, stepped up as Midlake’s new leader during the change-up and Antiphon is a baptism for a band that has found its voice again and comfortably so. Pulido told Stereogum in an interview ” In the end we just opted not to get too wrapped up in fear, and decided to just get to work.” The fearless sound is there, and with it, the realization that band members may come and go, but if the spirit is there, solid bands stick together (heck, you even own a bar together). Pulido took a little time to talk with WMSE about changes, collaborating, influences and the year, ahead.

Antiphon is more of a team effort as far as writing goes — how does that feel, post-release?

Because we were more collaborative in the writing process, there’s an inherent feeling of ownership that we all share for this record more than any of the previous. I feel like that translates both on the record and live. It’s a great feeling for us to now play the songs that we all collectively created.

The new music is pretty psych-drenched; it’s an obvious influence. What are some of your favorites of the genre to drench your own ears in when you’re not writing?

Pink Floyd is the easy answer, but they did it so well and definitely have been an influence for years.

You worked with producer Tony Hoffer who has worked with Air; the sound of Antiphon echoes that particular group’s work. What is your favorite characteristic of his trademark sound?

Tony mixed the record and we self-produced it, but he really brought everything to life and gave the record a huge sonic scope and the dynamic blew us away.

What is your most cherished review or reception of the new album and configuration?

We’ve been overwhelmed with the reception, but the most cherished are at live shows when you see people singing along and embracing us with their cheers. It’s really special.

What are your plans for 2014?

We will be touring throughout the year, here, there and everywhere!
