Here’s what you missed: A two-hour, non-stop dance party from DJ Yoda– one of the UK’s premiere DJs (or so the press clippings say). But I have no problem repeating it, because frankly, the clippings speak the truth. He was about as premiere as they come.
It was one of only five North American gigs from a performer who’s most recent claim to fame is having mixes featured on popular newish video game, DJ Hero. And you can thank local promoters Tap The Masses for that (and sponsors like WMSE, PBR, Moda3, Aloft, and Artists of Distinction. That’s what I call teamwork!).
But first: the night kicked off with Milwaukee’s own Kid Cut Up, co-host of WMSE‘s Tuesday night Mad Kids Show (6pm–9pm), No Request Sound crew member, and so on. If you live in Milwaukee, and aren’t familiar with him or his skills, you need to rethink your citizenship. Dude is out and about more than parking enforcers. Plenty of opportunities for you to get familiar.
We arrived an hour after doors opened, and Kid Cut Up was already on stage, warming the crowd up for DJ Yoda. For the unfamiliar, Kid Cut Up’s sets jump genres, often-times blending together the best of very different worlds. And the mash-ups tend to be as clever as they are flawlessly executed. Sublime’s “What I Got” tangoed with Arrested Development’s “Everyday People.” Queen’s “Fat Bottom Girls” vocals found a new home over Juvenile’s “Back That Thang Up”. And my memory’s too fuzzy to remember what a cappella-s he put over U2′s “Mysterious Ways” (did I mention PBR was a sponsor?).
DJ Yoda took the stage around midnight, starting his set with the audio from Wayne’s World where Alice Cooper offers a “Did You Know?” on Milwaukee. (You know: this one). Then the beat came in. Then the dance floor filled up and never stopped.
It was 120 minutes of boom, bap and boogie, with the occasional “never thought I’d see a crowd get down to this one” gems: Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire,” The Stanley Bros., “Man of Constant Sorrow,” Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5,” and the theme from Indiana Jones. It was absolutely ridiculous and amazing and I’m glad I was smart enough to not miss it. Yoda doesn’t tour the states often. But after the response he got at Stonefly, he admitted he definitely needs to return.
