Each Fall, New York is flooded with hordes of new musicians and bands, courtesy of music mavens, the College Music Journal (CMJ). CMJ’s annual music marathon, around since 1980, initially started out as a small, New York-centric showcase to introduce new, breaking artists in college radio, it quickly morphed into a multiple-venue, nearly week-long event that pulls bands from across the country and the globe to show their stuff. This year, the CMJ Music Marathon runs from today until the wee hours of Saturday, October 24th.

Performers past have included R.E.M. (for some folks, the quintessential ‘college’ band), Hot ChipModest MouseArcade Fire, the White Stripes and M.I.A. CMJ also offers radio stations, industry workers and musicians a little extra substance with their listening experiences: College Day focuses on college radio and presents College Radio Awards in several different categories. Stations can vie for ‘Station of the Year’ and the like. Continuing education programs are also available revolving around all things legal in the music industry, including copyright law, licensing and new news on digital and wireless media. Speakers such as Iggy PopDavid Bowie and Marilyn Manson have all offered their expertise to CMJ attendees.

This year, CMJ’s highlights include “showcases and panels such as in-depth discussion with the minds behind the musical Hair (Friday, 2 p.m., Eisner Auditorium), the premiere of the George Clooney film The Men Who Stare At Goats (Wed, 7 p.m., Clearview Cinemas Chelsea) and performances from School Of Seven BellsAtlas Soundthe AntlersFlying Machines, and many, many more.”

Along for the ride are several Milwaukee bands: Invade Rome and Elusive Parallelograms are just a couple that are making the trek to NYC. Tomorrow, we’ll talk to Invade Rome about heading out East for two performances at one of college radio’s biggest shindigs…
