HBO is Cable’s Best Jukebox

Though I haven’t seen this show yet (How To Make It In America), I’m high-fiving HBO for once again reaching past the mainstream musical muck to find something great to accompany a series of theirs.

Not that I’m surprised. They had Tom Waits and The Five Blind Boys of Alabama each do the opening theme for The Wire. David Byrne scored a season of Big Love. And don’t even get me started on the beautiful songs (and accompanying score) for Deadwood.

This time around, they hired Stones Throw Records’ soul-singin’ (and sometimes rappin’) Aloe Blacc, who teamed up with Expressions and El Michels Affair, to give us a slightly Bill Withers-y “I Need A Dollar.”

You can download the mp3 for free at Stones Throw’s Web site, and order the 12″ there once you fall in love with it. You should probably explore Aloe Blacc’s other efforts while you’re there.
