Asthmatic Kitty Records (the Holland, MI born label run by Sufjan Stevens and his stepdad) already has quite the eclectic roster. Castanets, Fol Chen, My Brightest Diamond, Rafter and Royal City all call Asthmatic Kitty homebase, making good use of the label’s affinity for quirk, oftentimes generously going full-throttle. One of the most interesting of the AK family is Jookabox (formerly Grampall Jookabox), headed by Indianappolis’ David “Moose” Adamson, the brainchild of loosening genres and washing them all together in the sparkly waters of pop. Hip hop, bluegrass, soul, funk and rock music all show their faces in what could now loosely be defined as ‘pop music’. Welcome to a new characterization of an old genre.
Jookabox performs at Club Garibaldi’s (2501 S. Superior) on Friday, May 7th. Also performing: Yourself & the Air and Into Arcadia. 9 p.m. 21+
