“Surf and Drag” is what Milwaukee’s Red Stuff categorizes themselves as, drawing from the influence of Link Wray, Miss Toni Fisher, the Quarter Notes and Curtis Mayfield. Formed in the winter of 2007, Red Stuff plays energetic, classic-style surf, tempered with electric autoharp, reverb-y and scuzz-y guitars and requisite organ and old-school percussion. Fronted by WMSE DJ Tom Wanderer [Thursdays, 3 p.m. – 6 p.m.] on guitar/vocals and helped out by Kelly Buros on autoharp/organ/vocals, the duo releases their LP The Best of Hot Rod Love tonight at the Palm Tavern (2989 S. Kinnickinnic) in Bay View. Released on the band’s own label, SKELL Records, The Best of Hot Rod Love is the follow-up to their first release, an EP that premiered in June of 2008.
The new release is most certainly surf-centric, with songs such as “Waimea Wave Club”, “Black Foam I & II” and “Surf Waltz”, making for an exotic sound by Wisconsin winter standards. The album is nicely rounded out with twangy autoharp on “The New Country Swag” which pairs up handclaps to bring it into a classic psych sound while “Street Thing” plays around with lots of vocal reverb and chugging guitar riffs.
Tonight, hear the new full length album from Red Stuff and enjoy the DJ skills of Mick Ramp and Piano Brown from 8 p.m. – 12 a.m. The Best of Hot Rod Love will be spun in its entirety at 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m.
