Milwaukee garage-pop trio Sticks N Stones may be relatively shiny-new in band terms, but are hardly anything but in terms other projects; members have been in and currently take part in groups such as the Catholic Boys, The Flips, the Tears, the Teenage Rejects and the Sugar Stems.
This Saturday sees the release of their first 7″ [entitled Red Light] presented in the good company of up-and-coming garage-punks from Milwaukee and Chicago; Dusty Medical Records (MKE) has taken Sticks N Stones into its lineup and has in turn, given the Milwaukee band its own solid lineup for their release show, having them rub elbows with others of the same ilk in proper style. Sticks N Stones is set to impress – Kevin Meyer of Dusty Medical describes the band’s debut 7″ as “infectious pop blasts from this trio of local punk veterans”. Paul Kalfahs, singer/guitarist for Sticks N Stones, shares info and a listen of the band’s new material with Milwaukee before Saturday’s show at Club Garibaldi’s.
This is your debut 7″ — got enough copies pressed to pass around, or is this a limited pressing?
There were 500 copies pressed, which is quite a bit for a band that not that many people know or care about, so there should be plenty of records to go around!
How’d you get involved with Dusty Medical Records [on which you’re releasing your 7″]?
Kevin (who runs Dusty Medical), came up to us after our second show and said he liked us and wanted to do a single. We’ve known him for a while and he released a record by our band Tuff Bananas a couple years ago…
What’s it like to be involved in the Milwaukee garage scene?
It’s cool! It’s just a buncha’ people playing around town and having fun. Nobody is taking themselves super seriously or anything. It’s a relatively small scene and alot of us are friends or acquaintances. I personally hear a lot more punk or pop than ‘garage’ in most of the bands around here.
Your previous (and current) bands: Catholic Boys, Sugar Stems, the Flips, Tuff Bananas, the Tears and the Teenage Rejects are all of the same sound-vein. How does Sticks N Stones manage to differentiate between all of these?
I guess there are some similarities running through all of the bands, which is bound to happen when you share members, but when you really get down to it, I think the approach is pretty different for each band. For Sticks N Stones, we’re more influenced by powerpop or glam than other bands we’ve been in.
You’re playing with some pretty awesome bands for your release show (White Mystery, Other Minds, etc.) — did you ask all the bands to play with you, or did your label set that up? You’ve already been involved in some pretty big-deal shows [i.e. opening for the Ponys].
Kevin from Dusty Medical was setting up that show already, and since it turned out to coincide perfectly with the release of our record, he decided to make it our release show. As far as getting on big shows, we’ve been bribing all of the local promoters with pizza.
What are you most excited about with this release?
To sell it to someone for an outrageous amount of money.
Where can people pick up a copy?
We’ll have copies at our show on Saturday, otherwise, Dusty Medical will have copies available. We’ll list any distros or record stores that you can get it at on our MySpace as soon as we know.
Sticks N Stones release their Red Light 7″ at Club Garibaldi’s (2501 S. Superior) on Saturday, March 27th. Also playing: White Mystery (CHI), Other Minds (CHI), Drugs Dragons(MKE) and the Get Drunk DJs will be spinning records in between sets. 9 p.m. 21+
