Tonight on Local/Live: the Friendly Lens

Pop by way of Milwaukee and Chicago is what the Friendly Lens are so adept at bringing to light in the most upbeat of perspectives. The band’s retro-y, keyboard-driven sound stands up to modern pop-punk, making this four-piece a great choice to open for the Smoking Popes this Friday at the Turner Hall Ballroom. The same jangly, bouncy elements that apply to the famed Chicago pop-punk band apply to the Friendly Lens. Matt Layton (keys, vocals), Zachary Coarson (guitar, voice, keys), Mike Meyers (bass) and Mike O’Brien (drums) give special attention to the driving energy of their songs, ringing out with guitars and tossing in keys like candy on songs like “It Started in the Mailroom” and the sinewy “This is It”.

Tune into 91.7 FM WMSE tonight at 8 p.m. to hear the Friendly Lens perform live on-air in anticipation of their Friday show at Turner Hall Ballroom (1032 N. 4th). Listen live on the radio or stream online at WMSE.org. Missed out? Catch it in the WMSE archives.
