Sharking Hour, born out of the band Art is for Amateurs, is mainly the work of Chris Scott and Pete Kostrivas. The duo takes a bit of a twang-y spin on the usual run of the mill of jangle pop for a sound that’s energetic, youthful and very Midwestern — both Scott and Kostrivas pitch in on guitars and vocals, with keys and percussion thrown in for good measure. The Sharking Hour’s recent release,North of Nippon was recorded last winter, and retains the delicious lo-fi quality of some of the best pop releases that ever hit the format of wax or ribbon with plenty of polished songwriting in the way of both Americana-rock bands such as the Obsoletes or a more drawled out and stripped down Arcade Fire.
