Once, Twice, Three Times the New, Local Releases

Total WMSE Music Department mailbox score X three today: new, local stuff from Drugs Dragons (7″), the Can’t Stop Knowing CD from The New Loud and Kings Go Forth’s Don’t Take My Shadow remix LP, freshly-pressed from Luaka Bop. It’s always nice to have the new, local stuff mixed in with ‘mainstreamers’ such as Alligator, Nacional, Matador and the like.

The video for KGF’s single “One Day” (click on the photo to listen) is a perfect example of the sweet soul sound that Curtis Mayfield so wonderfully created in the genre’s golden days. The ten-piece band, powered by energetic frontman Black Wolf, just released “Don’t Take My Shadow” on wax — three Tom Moulton mixes — in anticipation of their soon-to-be released full-length on L.B.

The New Loud, Milwaukee’s electro-punk trio-de-force, takes their namesake to heart on their latest release, blistering their recordings with synths and frantic, yet tuneful vocals. Sonic Diet featured the video for the single “Don’t Dance” in a recent post, which was shot in various local locations, among them UW-Milwaukee and the Cactus Club.

Drugs Dragons, part of Milwaukee’s dirge-y, sonic wasteland (this is a good thing) shares their just-released 7″ featuring “<I’m In A> Braingrave”/”Predator Weapons”. According the band Drugs Dragons”was formed in the Spring of 2009 from the ashes of Milwaukee’s Night Terrors…pioneering a weird, hard rock sound in an ocean of jangly cliched pop, boring bedroom noodlings and withering garage nonsense that the current state of underground rock ‘n roll languishes in…recorded by fellow Milwaukeean Ben Kastner of power-po band Bored Games [and] mastered by Justin Perkins“.
